Joe Burns, a Democrat representing the 5th District on the Binghamton City Council, announced Thursday his candidacy for mayor.
“I love Binghamton — its history, its traditions, its neighborhoods, but most of all its people,” Burns, a Southside resident who was elected to the City Council in 2019, said in a news release announcing his candidacy.
Burns, 67, said he plans to visit as many businesses and neighborhoods as is safely possible in the coming weeks and months to meet with residents and gauge their concerns.
Prior to running for public office, Burns retired from a career in film and television that spanned over 25 years as a Directors Guild of America assistant director.
Burns’ father, John J. Burns, served as mayor of Binghamton from 1958 to 1966.
